Downender AGVs lead to significant savings in ArjoWiggins paper mill

ArjoWiggins is the world’s leading manufacturer of technical and creation papers, particularly thanks to image enhancement and value protection. ArjoWiggins is present in high value-added markets. With 8,000 employees and 35 paper mills, including four in North America, two in Asia and two in Latin America, the paper manufacturing company generates sales of around two billion €, mostly on international markets.

Cutting-edge system for reel handling

Egemin Automation was the only supplier that introduced an AGV system with downender functionality capable of picking reels vertically in the warehouse and delivering them horizontally to the slitter machine. Impressed by the know-how on mechanical and controls domains, and elaborate experience in paper and print industries, ArjoWiggins
decided to team up with Egemin.

The E’gv® system automates the intermediate storage and transport of large paper reels between the production machines and the slitter machine. The reels are stored vertically in between both stages up to five reels high in the vertical reel warehouse. In addition to considerable savings in staff costs, Egemin’s system also lead to far less damage to the paper products and value added logistics thanks to the automated storage.

Project scope

The goal of the project is to manage the automatic handling of paper reels, of different types and with different sizes, that need to be supplied to the new slitter Machine C20. In order to complete these tasks, Egemin delivered, tested and installed a complete AGV system. The AGV system consists of three RLV type E’gv® with clamps to downend the reels at the slitter machine, E’tricc® software (Egemin Transport Intelligent Control Center) and an interface to the customer’s host system for order generation. The E’tricc® software takes care of the order dispatching of the individual reel transports, traffic control between the 3 E’gvs and location management in the reel warehouse.
